IDA Singapore: The sunrise industry of portable green power

Wednesday, August 12th, 2015

During the recent earthquake in Nepal, a Singapore startup’s technology made a difference. Some international rescue teams relied on solar power chargers made by the startup to run their mobile phones and laptops.

Similarly, following a major hurricane in the Philippines, these portable devices were deployed to charge phones when conventional power lines went down.

When emergencies occur, communications is vital, said Mr V S Hariharan, co-founder of the company Third Wave Power. “We hope that in time, low-cost solar chargers providing renewable power could be included in first-aid kits for victims of natural disasters so that they can get help and stay connected.”

Solar-powered chargers, some with built-in radios and emergency lights, also serve as a vital back-up during disasters. “In the US areas for example, some areas are prone to tornadoes, said Mr Hariharan. “Japan and New Zealand which face the threat of earthquakes and power outages are also turning to solar energy as a reliable form of renewable portable power.”

Natural disasters aside, the company hopes these devices will allow people, especially those living in rural areas of the world, to tap the benefits of modern technology and enrich their lives.

“In India for example, more people own handphones than landlines, but still many do not have ready access to power. So we started a pilot scheme in which local entrepreneurs can get these solar kits devices for about US$50. These can charge power banks which are rented out to consumers for as low as five rupees (10 cents) for a battery charge. This is part of our aim of democratising power and making it available and affordable to anyone, anywhere,” said Mr Hariharan.

With better charging technology for solar cells and improvements in battery performance, Third Wave Power Read More

All charged up on Aconcagua – the highest mountain outside of Asia

Tuesday, February 10th, 2015

Kurt Wedberg is the founder of Sierra Mountaineering International Inc  – a mountaineering guide service that has led trips in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains and other high peaks around the world. With over 30 years of mountaineering experience in the Sierra, Kurt has guided more than 100 expeditions in all seven continents.

Bringing portable electronics on trips has become standard for Kurt and his team and these include GPS watches, satellite communication devices, digital cameras, portable music devices and speakers.

For several months, Kurt has been using mPowerpad 2 Pro solar charger to charge his and his clients’ devices on many multi-day backcountry trips in the Sierra Nevada. Recently, he felt confident enough to take along mPowerpad 2 Pro while guiding a two-week expedition to Aconcagua located in the Andes mountain range near the Chilean border. Standing at 6,962m (22,841 feet), it is the highest mountain in the world outside of Asia.

“It was easy to leave mPowerpad 2 Pro outside our camps to soak up the sun in the daytime. At night inside my tent, I plugged in my devices and within an hour, they were completely charged,” said Kurt. These included a Suunto Ambit3 GPS watch, a Delorme inReach satellite communicator and an Apple iPod.

Kurt added, “Not only did mPowerpad 2 charge our devices quickly and efficiently every time, it is also easy to use. It charges two USB devices at once and with the detachable portable battery pack, it even charges a third. The solar charger is also lightweight which means carrying it in my pack has been a breeze.”

After the Aconcagua experience, Kurt recommends mPowerpad 2 solar charger to anyone looking for a charging solution for use in remote places, anywhere in the world.

The day the Prime Minister of Singapore came to visit

Monday, January 26th, 2015

Third Wave Power’s workspace is located in a really cool building (called Blk 71) which also houses many other start-up companies. On 23 January, when our landlord JTC Corporation opened two more such buildings in neighbouring blocks, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was invited to officiate at the launch. During his walkabout, PM Lee dropped in at our incubator space to find out more about what we and our co-start-ups do.

CEO Hariharan introduced our current product mPowerpad 2 to the PM, and also offered a sneak preview of our new product line-up. PM Lee asked some interesting questions during the session and later on, even gave us shout-out in his speech and Facebook posting.

Keeping things running in a Thai orphanage

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

On motorcylist-adventurer Terence Tay’s most recent adventure to northwest Thailand, Third Wave Power sponsored two units of mPowerpad 2 solar chargers to the Heavenly Home orphanage in Mae Sot. Here’s what Terence has to say:

“Thank you Third Wave Power for gifting the mPowerpad 2 to the 60+ orphans of Heavenly Home, Mae Sot, Thailand. It’s a thoughtful gesture. Mr. Thant Zin (the guardian of the children) could hardly contain his joy when he saw the solar cells. It’ll come in very useful whenever there are power outages at the home. The orphanage can now use the portable solar cells to power small electronic items and mobile devices. My partner Cherios Yippo and I are proud to be associated with your company and we share your philosophy in introducing renewable energy to remote parts of the world. We look forward to more innovative products from your company this year.”

Powering tablet-based tutorials for Filipino village children

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

Earlier this year, Skoolbo and The Patatas – two organisations dedicated to enabling people living in developing communities – came together to help some 40 impoverished Filipino children in Victory Village receive tablet-based tutorials. The tutorial classes are conducted by Tiwala Kids & Communities, a non-profit organisation that works with underprivileged and street children in Legazpi City, Albay in the Philippines.

The tablets are pre-loaded with Skoolbo, an educational application designed to help children learn English and Mathematics through interactive games. In the wake of the devastating typhoon Haiyan, power supply has not yet been fully restored in the village. Taking advantage of the abundant sunshine there, these tablets are instead powered by five mPowerpad 2 solar chargers. Besides keeping the tablets charged and running, mPowerpad 2 also provides a great way for children to learn about the use of sustainable energy.

With no downtime from their tablets, the kids have been making good progress in learning and class participation. By enabling education through digital resources, it goes a little way to help these children step out of poverty. At Third Wave Power, we are glad that energy is not only made good, it also does good.

Singapore, 21 October 2014 – Singapore-based company Third Wave Power Pte Ltd announced today that its mPowerpad 2 Lite solar charger has been tested and recommended by members of the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) in the United States.

The NTOA is set up to enhance the performance and professional status of law enforcement personnel with the goal to improve public safety and domestic security through training, education and tactical excellence.

The NTOA’s ‘Member Tested and Recommended Program’ allows manufacturers to have their products tested in the field by the law enforcement community. Products are tested and scored on a scale of 0–5 in 13 categories including Design, Performance, Quality, Durability and Versatility.

In the evaluation, mPowerpad 2 Lite solar charger had an overall score of 4.2 which puts it in the ‘Very Good’ range as ‘a product that exceeds advertised specifications on a regular basis and outperforms others in usefulness and quality of workmanship.’

The reviewer had this to say, “I was really impressed with this product and strongly recommend it. This device could be used on callouts, at home, camping, hiking or any other time you need a power source. While I was testing this product, a thunderstorm caused a power outage and the mPowerpad 2 Lite came in handy. I would definitely take this with me on callouts. It would be an excellent way to have a backup power source for a phone or GPS if you’re conducting rural tracking operations, surveillance or large-scale area searches. The bottom line is this is a solid product with endless uses. I found it very useful and strongly recommend it.”

mPowerpad 2 solar chargers are available in the US at online retailers such as Amazon, ShopHQ and Studica

Step Outside: YonathanSarah.com: Green Days Out With Solar Charger

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

Purchased a solar charger to solve my potential problem of running out of juice during the coming 1 month hike around Sagarmatha National Park aka Everest Base Camp trek. As my smartphone GPS is going to lead me, while a camera is going to keep me going, I simply cannot lose both of them during the hike. The people around this region mostly live off the grid, relying on solar power during the day. I could ended up powerless (pun intended) or penniless to do anything about it.

This rugged, water/dust resistant iPad size device stores 11500mAh of power. That’s enough power to charge my MotoG 7 times without the sun. I may harness the solar charger to the back of my backpack during the hike to replenish the charger battery pack itself – theoretically I should not have to worry about camera/phone battery level anymore.

The device also comes with some other features which I pay little attention to.

I brought it around the town and tested it for a while. Here are the results:

Under the direct sunlight:
It works! Though the “highly efficient 5.4W solar panel” probably means nothing to most of us. It is good to be green. And it feels like as if I had just received a freebies at shopping mall, or redeemed a free gift with the credit card points.

Under the shade:
Temperature has nothing to do with solar energy. Even if it is 32 degree Celsius outside, the solar charger simply won’t charge itself if it is placed under the shade. Though it works if you place it close enough to the edge of direct sunlight.

Bus ride:
Putting the solar charger by the window charges the Read More

IndiaSolarHomes.com: mPowerpad 2 Plus functions as a torch, reading light and a charging port for your gadgets

Wednesday, July 30th, 2014

In this gadget review we look at yet another power pad. Power pads are handy devices for trekkers, campers and urbanites that face regular power outages – or simply like to think of themselves as survivors. We had reviewed the Evaki power pad in an earlier post. This product, the mPowerpad 2 Plus from Third Wave Power is quite similar in its applications but differs in terms of design and charge delivery capabilities.

Design

On the design front, the mPowerpad 2 Plus is remarkably light, weighing only 575g. It comes in a standard rectangular casing that houses the electronics, a 6,600 mAh battery on the standard model, various ports and control knobs with and an output of up to 2 amps.

The product basically provides power for any USB device – phones, music players, fans or lights. While the primary task is to deliver power to external devices, the product comes with two built-in LED lights. The light in the front serves as a torch to the camper or the hiker and the light in the back panel serves as a reading light. That is great, but holding the device either as a torch or as a reading light can be quite uncomfortable. This should be improved upon in the next version, perhaps by providing an ergonomic holding notch or something similar.

The device is meant to be charged by solar power through a poly-crystalline 5.4Wp panel attached to the front surface of the device. However, in situations when there is a lack of sunlight, one can charge the device via a plug point, too. The charging port provided is a micro USB Type B plug that can also be connected to a laptop or an external wall charger. The adapter for the socket charger is sadly not shipped with the product. Powering the Motorcycle Diaries

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

Bitten by the adventure touring bug, Terence Tay quit his lecturer job in early 2014 to take his motorcycle, a BMW GS 800 Adventure, on a three-month long journey through Indo-China. The solo trip – which covered Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia – spanned some 13,000 km in all, taking him through far-flung places and remote border crossings.

“The goal was simple. It’s to show that an ordinary fellow can just pack up his bag and follow his dream, and that despite the turmoil gripping this region, Indochina is less hostile than imagined,” says Terence.

To document his adventure, the budding photojournalist took along devices such as his iPhone, iPad, action cameras as well as mPowerpad 2 Pro solar charger. His journey took him across rice fields, up mountains and into rural villages, where power outages were common. So while riding between two points – often between 6-10 hours in the saddle – Terence would strap mPowerpad 2 onto the back of his bike to charge under the sun. Essentially, this ensured that he would have sufficient power to charge his critical devices at his destination.

Even on days when he was not riding, he would leave the solar charger on the balcony, before using it to charge his devices. “Locals were curious about the solar charger. Even in rural farming areas where solar chargers are used to power television sets and refrigerators, they were amazed at how small and portable mPowerpad 2 is. It made for interesting conversations and was a definite icebreaker!” quips Terence.

So what does Terence like about mPowerpad 2? “Its ease of use and reliability. Once I figured out the dials, using mPowerpad 2 was a cinch. It allowed me to charge my mobile devices on the go and it didn’t Read More

The Examiner: Recharge via solar with mPowerpad 2

Monday, April 28th, 2014

mPowerpad 2 is perhaps the most versatile solar power panel I’ve ever encountered. Not satisfied to just be a solar collector, the mPowerpad 2 is the Swiss Army knife of solar panels. Sure, it collects power, but let’s look at all it does after the collection process.

I’ve been testing the Pro model (also comes in the Lite, Plus, and Ultra.) Not all the features come on the other models, so check the Product Range tab to see which features come on which models.

Two storage units gather and hold power. The main unit has a 6600mAh capacity and the removable mPowerpack50 holds another 5000mAh. The small power pack will easily fit in your backpack and give you multiple iPhone recharges. Together, the two units could charge your smartphone 5 to 8 times or your iPad 1 to 2 times.

Each unit comes with its own flashlight. Press the button twice and get a handy stream of emergency illumination. There is also a tiny reading light on the front of the unit. Both the flashlight and the reading light can function as an SOS light, pulsing out the message in Morse code.

The Pro model also comes with an FM radio and an ultrasonic insect repellant, which keeps bugs away that don’t like high frequency sounds. (I’ll have to wait for the polar vortex to leave to test that one.)

Using the solar panels are ideal when you are away from the grid or heaven forbid, the grid goes down. Expect at least 14 hours of sunlight to fully recharge the unit. This rating varies widely depending on the intensity of the sun’s rays. Winter sun in Cleveland, often did not fully recharge the main unit.

You can do it faster with a wall plug, but you should Read More

HardWareZone: First Looks: mPowerpad 2 Ultra Solar Charger Charges Your Phones with the Sun

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

Power, power, power. If you own a modern smartphone, chances are you’ve experienced the heart-chilling moment when your battery drops to zero and your connection to the world goes to a gentle sleep.

That’s where something like the mPowerpad 2 Ultra solar charger comes in. There are battery cases and battery packs, and then there are everything-including-the-kitchen-sink devices like the mPowerpad 2 Ultra. This thing doesn’t just convert sunlight into stored electricity, it also has a removable battery pack, plus built-in FM radio, reading light, flashlight, SOS signal and ultrasonic insect repellent (there are six versions of the mPowerpad 2 with varying features).

The mPowerpad 2 Ultra looks innocuous with a plain beige design. The plastic shell doesn’t feel high-grade but Third Wave Power, which makes the product, says that it’s sealed with a silicon gasket and grommets, and is water as well as dust resistant. Its height and width are only slightly larger than an iPad, at 610g (for the Ultra version) and it doesn’t feel too heavy (unless you’re an ultralight backpacker).

The various features on the mPowerpad 2 Ultra are activated via a clickwheel by the side. A circle of LEDs light up to show which function you’re on, and it all works okay except for the radio. Because there’s no numerical indicator, you never know in which direction or what band you’re searching for to find your favorite radio station. The SOS function flashes SOS in Morse code using both the reading light and flashlight. An indirect problem with that is that if you’re out of other sources of light, the blue LEDs on the mPowerPad 2 Ultra aren’t powerful enough to show you which control you’re currently at in the dark; so trying to activate the SOS function in the dark (or any Read More

Burnpavement: Sun power | mPowerpad 2

Monday, March 24th, 2014

In a recent drive up to Malaysia, we brought along a rather interesting gadget to aid our multiple-phone charging woes. A solar-powered charger that worked remarkably well!

Some modern cars may be equipped with more than one 12V powerpoint. But most cars on our roads still only have one. So what happens when more than one person that needs to charge their phones?

While it is perfect for using in a car, the mPowerpad 2 is more than that, it is a portable solar-powered charger that you can bring along with you anywhere you go. Hiking, camping and outdoor activities where there are virtually no access to electrical power, are some perfect examples of how this device can come in very useful.

In our test though, we left it on the dashboard to charge. With just over an hour of direct sun, we could easily fully charge our iPhone 5. That’s almost as fast as plugging it into the wall! It’s versatile at the same time and can be charged via the sun, wall or USB connector.

With our demo unit, the charging performance was truly remarkable when used in the hot sun. But the time it took to charge the phone did slow down at night, even though the mPowerpad 2 was at full capacity. Still it managed to fully charge the phone under four hours.

To make things even handier, the mPowerpad 2 comes with a detachable pocket battery pack that lets you carry it around in your pocket. You can even separately charge two phones by utilising both the main charger and the battery pack. It’s water resistant too!

If that’s not enough, the mPowerpad 2 is more than a charger! It even has a built-in radio, LED reading light, high-frequency insect repellant, and a Read More

Mountains hi-res

Reaching new heights in the Himalayan mountains

Friday, March 14th, 2014

In December 2013, Rizalde Calija and four other climbing enthusiasts – who formed Team X-Boundaries – embarked on a three week climbing expedition to the Himalayan mountains in Nepal. The trip included a 10-day climb up the 5700m high Yala Peak followed by an 8-day ascent to the 6000m Pisang Peak.

As packing light is essential for any mountaineer, the team carefully selected the items to include in their backpacks. Besides layered warm clothing, communication and navigation devices, power cords and cables, they also took along a unit of 11,600 mAh mPowerpad 2 Pro solar charger – which comes with a removable mPowerpack battery pack – with sufficient battery capacity to charge up to seven smartphones.

Up in the mountains by day, mPowerpad 2 charged up fast under the sun – working well at high altitudes and under freezing temperatures – before it was used to charge the climbers’ various devices. By night, the charger’s built-in lights came in handy for reading, while its radio kept them tuned in.

“As mountaineers, we need a reliable solar charger that can power our phones, cameras, GPS device, radios and other essential equipment. mPowerpad 2 Pro served our needs well. We are always on the go but with it, can stay connected to the world even where there was no power supply. mPowerpad 2 is not only versatile but also durable and proven to work effectively in freezing temperatures,” said Rizalde.

What the team also found useful was the removable mPowerpack pocket battery pack which they could remove and carry along when making ascents to higher altitudes.

After a successful outing, Team X-Boundaries has plans to bring mPowerpad 2 solar charger on more climbing expeditions in the future.

Channel EMEA: Third Wave Power ready to shine at DISTREE EMEA

Tuesday, February 11th, 2014

Third Wave Power will look to raise the profile of its mPowerpad 2 solar charger at DISTREE EMEA this week. VS Hariharan, co-founder and CEO at Third Wave Power, said: “We want to get mPowerpad 2, the world’s most versatile solar charger, in front of as many retailers and distributors as possible to drive interest and introduce the product to EMEA markets. We will also use DISTREE EMEA to build awareness and get media coverage for the product.”

“We want distributors to know about this new category of solar chargers, which has the promise and potential to take solar into the mainstream market,” he added. “We see a growing population of portable devices demanding more power both on-grid and off-grid. With more people carrying devices and going off-grid for work or recreation, there is a growing demand for a portable charger that will keep them productive on their devices.”

Third Wave Power is committed to selling through the channel and believes there are significant growth opportunities in Central and Southern Europe for the mPowerpad 2.

“It is a new category, with very little competition and sizeable incremental revenue for channels,” continued Hariharan. “The product is built to be of the highest quality and has many multi-function features not seen in other solar chargers.” Third Wave Power plans to introduce numerous accessories for the product alongside marketing and demand generation activities.

“Our channel programme is a two-tier structure in many countries, with a distributor and then a reseller or retailer. We offer competitive margins for both tiers – the margin levels depend on the services delivered,” said Hariharan. “We provide a range of marketing tools like datasheets; catalogues; POS display stands, videos and website materials.”

“We will partner with retailers as needed on push activities, through their fliers, demonstration day Read More

Kottaiyur village

Making a difference to Tamil Nadu villagers with mPowerpads

Monday, January 20th, 2014

In December 2013, Third Wave Power was approached by Ms Angela Sim, Managing Director of Affluence Public Relations to donate 50 units of mPowerpad Lite to villagers in India. To enable this, we worked with local NGO Integrated Village Development Project (IVDP) whose founder Kulandei Francis helped to eradicate the use of kerosene lamps in over 179,000 households over the last few decades.

The recipients of the mPowerpads are village dwellers in Anchetty, Sesurajapuram and Kottaiyur in Tamil Nadu who are typically working in agriculture, small goods shops, tea stalls and eateries, construction, plumbing and carpentry. As the villagers have used solar lights before, they were familiar with using mPowerpad even though it comes with more features. They all own basic mobile phones (that they depend on for their livelihoods) which they can now charge using mPowerpad, in addition to having light at night to work and read.

Here’s what Affluence PR has to say, “Affluence PR is proud to be a donor of Third Wave Power’s mPowerpads to villagers in India. Benefiting 50 families who now have access to power in their hands, it is Affluence PR’s intent to help these families experience the benefit of easy access to electricity. Electricity is an integral part of a society’s development. In lengthening the work day by providing a light source at night, using electricity to minimise mundane tasks, and allowing the village to access to information and education that would otherwise not be possible, it is but one company’s contribution to make the world a better place by making it a brighter place. Providing light to one home at a time and enriching lives, this is Affluence PR’s ongoing contribution to the world we live in.”

Thank you Affluence PR!

BestTechie: mPowerpad 2: A Solar Charger & Portable Battery Pack Hybrid

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

I try to go camping at least once a year. The past few trips haven’t been far from Harrisburg; in fact, they’ve actually been within the city’s limits on islands planted in middle of the Susquehanna River. There are enough trees to surround a campsite, but if you take a few steps out past the treeline, you’re staring at the large structures that make up the skyline of Pennsylvania’s capital. It gives the trip an almost apocalyptic feel — like we’re roughing it because civilization and all its gadgets have been wiped out.

Except that’s not the case. We all still carry our smartphones, and the glow of the campfire competes with those of our displays. Civilization isn’t gone — bright lights are a mere half mile away, though so are the power outlets that would normally be charging our phones. That problem — battery life — rears its head pretty quickly.

That’s why I’m so intrigued by the mPowerpad 2, a solar charger from Singapore-based Third Wave Power. The company claims it is the “world’s most versatile solar charger,” able to charge an iPhone with just one hour of sun. Granted, that sun needs to be good sun; even Third Wave Power says that “charge times may depend on weather conditions,” so you won’t be back on your iPhone after an hour of cloud-filtered light. But even with that disclaimer in place, an hour to “charged” is impressive.

The mPowerpad 2 is also expandable, and will allow users to add on to increase its charging capacity. According to the Third Wave Power website, the charger can be taken from 3300 mAh to as high as 11600 mAh. For some perspective, the iPhone 5s battery is 1560 mAh.

Devices can be charged via USB, and there are two ports Read More

Yachts International: Keep smart devices powered up at sea

Monday, December 23rd, 2013

Long-range cruisers need no longer worry about keeping their smart devices fully charged. Singapore-based company Third Wave Power Pte. Ltd. recently launched mPowerpad 2—the latest and most advanced addition to its mPowerpad range of portable multi-function solar chargers. The new mPowerpad 2 is a personal solar charger that charges even in cloudy conditions, and refuels your iPhone in just 1 hour. It’s perfect for yachtsmen who travel off the grid, and is especially useful on tenders and remote ship-to-shore excursions, as it can be detached and carried around a port-of-call while the main unit is left in the sun to continue charging.

The new mPowerpad 2 solar charger charges fast, both from the sun and to devices that are plugged into it. With a battery capacity that is expandable from 3300 mAh to 11600 mAh, it can charge a smartphone up to 8 times. It also features a pocket battery pack called mPowerpack that can be docked and removed from the main unit, as well as built-in radio, light and insect repellent. Weighing just 500g, mPowerpad 2 is half the weight and 40% thinner compared to the previous version – making it a highly portable and sustainable source of energy for users constantly on the move, within and without the power grid. What makes mPowerpad 2 truly unique and portable is the introduction of mPowerpack – a detachable battery pack that can be docked, charged, removed and carried around in one’s pocket or gear bag.

mPowerpack not only supplies ready power on the go, it also provides users the flexibility to add more charging power as and when it is needed. Designed for rugged outdoor use, mPowerpad 2 has an outer shell made of sturdy high-strength plastic and sealed by a silicone gasket and grommets, making it water- and Read More

International Business Times: Here Comes The Sun: India On Verge Of Becoming Global Solar Power

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

India is on the brink of becoming a global solar power, according to a report just published by the World Bank. Under the government’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission Phase-1 (JNNSM), which was initiated in January 2010 to promote sustainable growth, broadly expand solar power, and deal with the effects of climate change, India’s installed capacity of solar power has already jumped from about 30 megawatts to more than 2,000 MW.

The World Bank noted that JNNSM has also helped bring down the cost of solar power to competitive levels – down to about $0.12 per kilowatt-hour for solar photovoltaic, and to $0.21 per kWh for concentrated solar power, thereby making India one of the world’s lowest-cost destinations for grid-connected solar power. “In a short span of three years, India has made impressive strides in developing its abundant solar power potential,” said Onno Ruhl, World Bank Country Director in India, according to The Hindu newspaper. “With more than 300 million people without access to energy and industry citing energy shortage as key growth barrier in India, solar power has the potential to help the country address the shortage of power for economic growth.”

Indeed, the solar park in Charanka in Gujarat is already the largest such facility in all of Asia. Of equal importance, the bank said, expansion of solar power would reduce India’s over-dependence on imports of coal and diesel for power generation, cut greenhouse gas emissions and also upgrade the nation’s energy security. The bank report also highlighted two special features of India’s solar program – the bundling of solar power with unallocated thermal generation and the introduction of “reverse auctioning.” The “bundling” of solar power with cheaper forms of conventional energy sources had cut solar power tariffs for distribution centers. The “reverse auction” process has allowed Read More

The Economic Times: Singapore co projects demand for solar chargers in rural India

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

SINGAPORE: Singapore-based solar charger maker, Third Wave Power, expects a strong demand for its power packages in rural India.

“We expect demand for portable solar charges to reach a high of 40 million units in the next five years in rural India, including small towns,” Third Wave’s co-founder and chief executive officer V S Hariharan said here today.

Present demand is nominal in the range of a few thousand pieces a year, he said.

Hariharan said the company’s initial survey of India’s rural market for portable solar charges shows demand would come from places away from the main electricity grid or even those within the power network but facing chronic shortage of electricity supplies.

Based on such high potential demand, Third Wave has designed light solar chargers which include necessities such as flash light and radio in every piece.

“We can charge these solar panels anywhere in the sun and then use it to re-charge mobile phones and other light-power consuming instruments,” Hariharan told PTI.

The Indian market is a major model for the company which exports its light-weight solar chargers to markets in Asia, Europe and the United States.

It is also designed for use during typhoons and distress environment after natural calamities, when power supplies are disrupted even in developed countries.

But India remains a unique market for Third Wave. “There were constant need for recharging mobiles/cells but it was becoming more challenging in rural areas, especially those having to work away from power grids, he pointed out”, he said.

These mobile phone users include farmers and healthcare workers in remotest regions, fishermen on high seas as well as campers on hills, among others.

In some smaller towns and dwellings, an increasing number of people were willing to pay from Rs 5 to Rs 15 for recharging Read More

Singapore, 13 November 2013 – Singapore-based company Third Wave Power Pte Ltd today announced the launch of mPowerpad 2 – its latest and most advanced addition to its mPowerpad range of portable multi-function solar chargers.

The new mPowerpad 2 solar charger charges fast – both from the sun and to devices that are plugged into it. With a battery capacity that is expandable from 3300 mAh to 11600 mAh, it can charge a smartphone up to 8 times*.

“Based on users’ feedback on the first mPowerpad, especially in terms of performance and portability, we went back to the drawing board and radically changed its design. Typically, solar chargers have a trade-off between charging speed and portability, but with the innovative mPowerpad 2, you get the best of both worlds. On the outside, it is lighter, slimmer and ultra portable. On the inside, it is faster, expandable and extremely versatile,” said Lim Chuin Kiat, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Third Wave Power.

What makes mPowerpad 2 truly unique and portable is the introduction of mPowerpack – a detachable battery pack that can be docked, charged, removed and carried around in one’s pocket or bag. mPowerpack not only supplies ready power on the go, it also provides users the flexibility to add more charging power Read More
