PAY AS YOU GO: THE FUTURE OF ENERGY SECURITY IN INDIA
Limited access to electricity is a Global problem and many countries are trying to connect people with grid electricity. India is also the most un-electrified country in Asia, with almost more than 300 Million people or almost 77 million households. These people strive to do their daily chores such as cooking, working extra hours and studying. Connection to a grid is also very expensive at the same time, as many people are unable to bear these expenses. The most widely used lighting tool is Kerosene lamps, which are harmful and bear risks of explosion. Electricity plays a pivotal role for development and upliftment of the rural people. The Asia Development Bank report states that these households pay roughly $9 or more every month for lighting and other energy needs, and 31% of them use kerosene as the only source of lighting. Energy-poor households in India spend over $2 billion annually on kerosene alone, of which $1.8 billion is spent by rural households These poor households roughly need to spend half of their savings to electrify their houses. And those who don’t have the privilege of electricity relies on kerosene, firewood, paraffin, candles, and disposable batteries. These are inefficient, expensive and generates mass environmental and health concerns.
Thus, there is a huge need to provide energy security to these households at affordable cost. Third Wave Power Pay as you go model is one of its kind model which addresses the above-stated issue. In this system, the customer pays small initial payment to have this Solar PV system installed on their premises. After this, the customer pays monthly very small amount to use this Solar PV. But the best part of this scheme is that this monthly payment adds up towards the total purchase price of the system. And thus, after a year, the customer can own this system fully and can enjoy clean and free electricity forever.
The Jugnu PAYG 3 Bulb Solar Lighting and Phone Charging System is equipped with an 8W Solar Panel, 3 LED Bulbs, a Charging System with replaceable battery and mobile phone charging cable. The Charging system is integrated with a Keypad and a Wall Light. This system is unique in itself with its simplified payment system.
Third Wave Power recently launched Pay as You Go pilot project in North West Indian state called Rajasthan. Rajasthan has one of the largest off-grid rural population in India. Yet it one of the most solar energy rich state receiving maximum sunlight. The PaYG system is being currently tested on rural grounds. This project has met with great success and high demand as they were able to move form unreliable and poor energy sources like kerosene, firewood to more reliable, cost-efficient and clean energy.
